Humbled...

Humbled?

After our first attempt at anything comparable to an endurance test for us, Gary, Porkchop and myself approached the door of The Mello Mushroom bragging that we deserved to gorge ourselves on the bounty of their pizza. We just survived our first two-day 150 mile bicycle tour, and thought we were the stars. As we were being triumphantly led to our table, there he was. While silently eating calzone with his family, he stridently pronounced our inferiority. Two simple words embroidered on the pocket area of his jacket below his left shoulder screamed to us the relative nanoscopic scale of our accomplishment -- Ironman Finisher.

giveCYCLEserve the dream

giveCYCLEserve was conceived by a rag tag group of beginning cyclists that talked, over espresso drinks many nights after our rides, about the potential of cycling and service to others in some combination. After riding in a small St. Jude benefit ride we decided that we would work toward some plan to serve others with cycling as a major component.

We identified 5 goals and began working toward them.

1. Encourage others to enjoy the same benefits we have from cycling
2. Develop a program to launch in the Spring / Summer of 2010 that would teach kids to ride, maintain, and care for bikes in a way that would encourage exercise, fitness, pride of self and equipment. The short description is you work on your bike, you ride your bike, you earn your bike.
3. Communicate bicycle safety to the community to create an environment where cycling can thrive as a sport, as recreation, as well as transportation.
4. Participate as a group in 6 to 9 benefit rides each year. Three times each year we join one and ride, three times we volunteer to support an event so others can ride, and three times we host and facilitate a ride.
5. Volunteer to help our community become more bicycle friendly.

How would you marry the two?
